This guideline includes cleaning, passivating, and commissioning heat exchangers in evaporative cooling water systems, once-through, and closed-loop systems. WTG-142 (Treatment of Galvanized Cooling Towers to Prevent White Rust) discusses the treatment of galvanized components. This guideline excludes information about operating procedures because these elements are specific to site conditions.

Purpose.

The purpose of this document is to provide plant owners and operators with a set of consensus guidelines for cleaning, passivating, and commissioning water-cooled heat exchangers to maximize the reliability of new and existing heat transfer assets in cooling water systems. Other stakeholders include water treatment chemicals and service providers and heat exchanger manufacturers.
