This Instruction applies to the Coast Guard Directives System and its publications only. Requirements and best practices are provided for effective Directives management, including the maintenance and implementation of Section 508 standards for all final publications. This Instruction does not provide guidance on Directives published by any other federal department or agency. It is recommended the reader become familiar with the Directives and publications that are listed here in numerical series order:

PURPOSE.

This Instruction establishes the policy for the Coast Guard's Directives System Program in accordance with References (a) through (d) and provides guidance for the publication lifecycle of a Commandant Instruction (CI), ALCOAST, and other policy publication (s). Additionally, this Instruction outlines the Coast Guard Headquarters' interface with U.S. Department of Defense Issuance (DoDI) review processes and describes the Coast Guard role on the Joint (multi) Service Directives Working Group. This Instruction does not cover policy for Coast Guard External Affairs.
