This specification applies to the supply of new hardwood and softwood timber for use as

• sleepers for plain line;
• bearers in switch & crossing layouts, and
• longitudinal timbers for bridges and pit roads.

The scope of this standard includes the minimum requirements for quality control and inspection and also specifies accepted methods of preservation and finishing.

Purpose

This specification defines the requirements for the supply of wood sleepers and bearers, and longitudinal timbers, for use in Network Rail's permanent way.
