scope:
Guideline VDI 6004 Part 2 deals with the measures applicable in the planning, building, operation and use of buildings, installations and facilities which can be implemented to prevent or reduce possible damage due to lightning and overvoltage. This guideline applies not only to new buildings but also to alterations to and expansions of existing buildings. Particular attention is given to the risks to technical building services.
What is important is to take suitable action to ensure the functionality and serviceability of technical building services are retained and that personal injury and damage to installations and property is averted.
The fact that technical building services are electrically networked across trades on account of the functions to be implemented means that all components may be at risk of operational malfunctions or damage. These systems are sensitive to overvoltages and should therefore be carefully planned and built.
This guideline is directed in particular at contracting authorities, building owners, businessmen in trade and industry, civil engineers, architects, building services engineers, administrative bodies and insurance companies as well as all persons engaged directly or indirectly in designing, building, maintaining, servicing and conserving buildings and their technical installations. Also addressed are system manufacturers of lightning and surge protective devices (SPDs), manufacturers of electrical installations and of electrically powered equipment.
