scope:
This standard applies to all London Underground (LU) track including running lines depot track and sidings.
The standard covers:
a) principles for new designs of track components and configurations
b) design of layouts
c) requirements for the use of current standard designs of track components and configurations
d) requirements for the following track support features: ballast, shingle, formation, sand blankets (and equivalents), geosynthetics, second-stage concrete, transition slabs and drainage systems.
The requirements in this standard apply to the upgrading and renewal of existing track only to the extent of it being reasonably practicable to do so.
Note: Where it is mandatory that any of the supporting information in section 5 of this standard is to be applied, the appropriate requirement is set in section 3.
This standard does not cover the requirements of completed work tolerances, which are subject of standard S1179.
The standard does not cover the requirements associated with the inspections and maintenance of the track system, which are the subject of standard S1158.
This standard does not cover the requirements of maintenance tolerances, which are subject of standard S1159.
The standard shall be read in conjunction with standards S1162, S1163 and S1164 in respect of conductor rails and associated components.
The standard does not cover the requirements associated with Rail Defect management, which are the subject of standard S1178.
This standard must be followed by Permanent Way engineering and track maintenance teams with responsibility for the track, as well as Suppliers and Contractors when designing and installing track.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to identify the performance, design and configuration requirements for new track components, configurations, layouts, and track bed.
