This module applies to assets managed in accordance with the structures management framework in NR/L2/CIV/032.
The examination regimes included in this module can also be applied to ancillary assets, which sit outside the structures management framework.
This module does not apply to reservoirs.

This module applies to the following examination types:
• Detailed examinations;
• Visual examinations;
• Enhanced examinations;
• Underwater examinations;
• Visual examination by Line of Route.
This module does not cover the following aspects of examination:
• Planning and undertaking examinations;

This module does not cover procedures for unscheduled examinations undertaken in response to an incident. Responsive procedures covered elsewhere are:
• responsive reports by staff operators and public;
• bridge strike incidents;
• adverse and extreme weather events.
Purpose
This module sets out the process for defining, implementing, and managing a programme of structures examinations and the actions arising from examinations.
Examinations identify changes to the asset, its use, and its environment to inform management decisions.
This module mitigates the risk of functional failure(s) going undetected by the asset management teams (Structures) which may result in accidents and/or disruptions to the operation of the railway network.
