This Standard specifies the method for Rockwell and Rockwell superficial hardness tests (scales and fields of application are as given in table 1) for metallic materials.

NOTE 1 In ISO 6508-1, the use of hardmetal ball indenter is considered to be the standard for Rockwell hardness indenter ball, and when there is the specification of the product standard or the agreement between the parties concerned with delivery, the use of steel ball indenter is made to be allowed. The hardmetal ball is planned to be the standard indenter besides in this Standard at the time of next revision.

NOTE 2 Attention is drawn to the fact that the result obtained with a hardmetal ball may be significantly different from that when using a steel ball.

NOTE 3 For specific materials and products such as hardmetal, other specific International Standards apply (for instance, ISO 3738-1 [1], ISO 4498-1 [2]).

NOTE 4 For certain materials, the fields of application of hardness may be narrower than those indicated.

NOTE 5 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.
