Part 1 of this NES deals with the general requirements and practices to be considered when carrying out the planning, preparation of drawings and the structural arrangements of a steel surface ship.

It is also concerned with the general requirements applicable to all aspects of the hull structure, superstructure, appendages and those seating's which are fully integrated with the structure and are provided to accommodate major items of machinery or equipment.

The requirements and practices described herein are common to various types of ships. For information regarding structure peculiar to a particular type of ship the Contract Documents for that ship are to be consulted.

This NES does not apply to ships designed to Department of Trade, Lloyd's Register or other Classification Society Rules. 

Glass reinforced plastic ship structures are covered in NES 140.
