This procedure applies to all pearlitic rail ends, holes in plain line and S&C applying both compression and shear wave scans and as far as coupling conditions allow. For handheld probes refer to NR/L3/TRK/055/U1. For scarfed joints refer to NR/L3/TRK/055/U20.

This procedure is capable of detecting the following defect types:-

a) Horizontal defects

b) Bolt hole defects

c) Bond hole defects

Purpose 

This ultrasonic procedure is used to detect the presence of horizontal cracks, bolt hole cracks and cracks at bond holes at rail ends, plain line and S&C using a Roller Search Unit (RSU).
