The rules in this section cover requirements to the EES space and to the design, installation and certification requirements for lithium-ion battery systems and electrochemical capacitor systems.

Guidance note:

Battery systems with other chemistries than lithium-ion will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The main principles in this section will be applied.

This section provides prescriptive requirements to EES installations on board vessels. The requirements prescribe technical solutions that may not be suitable for certain vessel designs, such as vessels constructed of materials other than steel and for vessels of smaller size. According to Pt.1 Ch.1 Sec.1 [2.5.9], alternatives to detailed requirements may be accepted when the overall safety and reliability level is found to be equivalent or better than that of the rules. See [2.1] for documenting equivalent safety for alternative designs to the detailed requirements in this section. DNV-CG-0660 provides further guidance on how to document an equivalent safety and reliability level for EES installations.

The requirements in [2] shall be complied with in addition to the general fire safety measures in applicable statutory regulations.

Guidance note:

Statutory regulations, such as SOLAS and the 2000 HSC Code, do not include regulations regarding fire safety measures suitable for these types of EES installations. The requirements in [2] are providing fire safety measures for such EES installations. The requirements in [2] do not cover the full scope of fire safety measures in the statutory regulations, hence shall be complied with in addition to the general fire safety measures in applicable statutory regulations.
